He is the father of the protagonists, Edward and Alphonse Elric. He is a brilliant and well-known alchemist. He left Ed, Al, and their mother Trisha when Al was a baby and Ed was very young. As Edward Elric points out in book 14 of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, "Elric is my mother's name!" He (in the original 2003 anime)...  ~!  Has been alive for centuries. He worked in a lab, which took advantage of 'witch trials' as human bait, to create the first philosopher's stone. He succeeded, but it cost him his life. Dante, (his lover at the moment) attached his soul (much like Al to armor) to the nearest man in the room, reviving Hohenheim. They continued this practice for many years, until Hohenheim fell in love and married Trisha Elric. After they sired Edward and Alphonse, he left for fear Dante would use them against him, and also because he felt ashamed of his past. Like Dante, his flesh is wearing away, so he must wear cologne to mask the scent. He can transmute without circles, because when he died, he saw past the gate, as did Dante. !~  He (in the manga and 2009 series) is...  ~! a human Philosopher's Stone. Homunculus (Father) was a test subject at a lab in which Hohenheim worked (in fact, Father was the one who named Hohenheim). The king of Xerxes demanded the secret of immortality from the homunculus, and he obliged. a country wide transmutation is formed, and everything is working as planned. However, at the last minute, Father lies about where the center of the circle is, and engulfs both himself and Hohenheim into the gate. Hohenheim wakes to see everybody in his country dead. He meets Homunculus, who tells him everything, how he has now gained half of the powers of the stone. Homunculus did this out of gratitude. after these events, Hohenheim travels to Xing, and founds the art of Alkahestry.!~

Alchemy is bound by this Law of Equivalent Exchange—something the young brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric only realize after attempting human transmutation: the one forbidden act of alchemy. They pay a terrible price for their transgression—Edward loses his left leg, Alphonse his physical body. It is only by the desperate sacrifice of Edward's right arm that he is able to affix Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. Devastated and alone, it is the hope that they would both eventually return to their original bodies that gives Edward the inspiration to obtain metal limbs called "automail" and become a state alchemist, the Fullmetal Alchemist.
 
Three years of searching later, the brothers seek the Philosopher's Stone, a mythical relic that allows an alchemist to overcome the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Even with military allies Colonel Roy Mustang, Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, and Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes on their side, the brothers find themselves caught up in a nationwide conspiracy that leads them not only to the true nature of the elusive Philosopher's Stone, but their country's murky history as well. In between finding a serial killer and racing against time, Edward and Alphonse must ask themselves if what they are doing will make them human again... or take away their humanity.

Aaron is an American voice actor who works for anime series of Funimation Entertainment.  He started voice acting when he was nine years old as the voice of Hiro Sohma and the young Akito Sohma in Fruits Basket. He was only twelve years old when he voiced the role of Alphonse Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist, and is a cousin of voice actor and director Justin Cook. Aaron was one of few child voice actors in the voice acting field.  Due to his voice maturing, he was replaced by Maxey Whitehead for his role of Alphonse Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but makes a cameo as the voice of the young Van Hohenheim, Edward and Alphonse's father.

Vagner Abiate Fagundes is a Brazilian actor, voice actor and dubbing director. Dubbing since the 90s, Vagner has become one of the greatest Brazilian voice actors working with several anime. Among his highlights are Son Gohan (teen and adult) from the Dragon Ball series, Touya Kinomoto in Card Captor Sakura, Zim in Invader Zim, Monkey D. Luffy in One Piece, Shikamaru Nara in Naruto, and Shun Kazami in the Bakugan series. The rules of alchemy state that to gain something, one must lose something of equal value. Alchemy is the process of taking apart and reconstructing an object into a different entity, with the rules of alchemy to govern this procedure. However, there exists an object that can bring any alchemist above these rules, the object known as the Philosopher's Stone. The young Edward Elric is a particularly talented alchemist who through an accident years back lost his younger brother Alphonse and one of his legs. Sacrificing one of his arms as well, he used alchemy to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor. This lead to the beginning of their journey to restore their bodies, in search for the legendary Philosopher's Stone.
