The reigning Master. He possesses the most intuition out of all the current karuta players, and has 28 one-syllable cards. Suoh started Karuta during university, and became Meijin within 3 years, and has held the title for 4 consecutive years. Everyone acknowledges his god-like abilities, but he is on constant lookout for someone stronger than himself. He is a solitary genius who always suffers from hunger, and is hard to become excited. It is his 4th time repeating a year at university.  Personality: The current Meijin is a weirdo? At first glance he may look like a typical university student, but in reality he is tall, has a questionable beard, an extremely quiet voice, and loves Japanese confectionery. His personal favourite idol is “Kyokotan” (Yamashiro Kyouko) who is a professional Karuta reader. He once asked her for a recording of her reading the poems, after offering her a gift of confectionaries. He is a man who wants to only fight strong people, and so he rarely makes an appearance at tournaments. In an interview, he has started that he wants to quickly be Meijin 5 years in a row, become an eternal-Meijin, then retire.

Chihaya Ayase is a girl who has spent most of her life simply supporting her sister in her model career. That changes when she meets a boy named Arata Wataya, a talented karuta player who recognizes Chihaya's potential to become a great player herself. As Chihaya takes on a new dream of becoming Japan's best karuta player, she is soon separated from her karuta playing friends, Taichi Mashima and Arata Wataya, as they grow up. Now in high school, Chihaya still continues to play karuta in the hope that she will one day meet her friends again.

Chihaya is a girl in the sixth grade, still not old enough to even know the meaning of the word zeal. But one day, she meets Arata, a transfer student from rural Fukui prefecture.
