The young Prince of Silverland, Sapphire is in reality a girl, but must pretend to be a boy in order to inherit the throne and prevent the evil Duke Duralumon from taking power. Her personality is more refined than tomboyish, but she's good with a sword and at night fights crime as the masked Phantom Knight. She's good-hearted, has a strong sense of justice and is competent and level-headed as well. Although most of her time is spent as Prince Sapphire, later in the series she is able to go about as a girl (wearing a blonde wig) in the persona of the Princess, Prince Sapphire's sister. In this way she is able to court Prince Frank.

Princess Sapphire is a girl raised as a Prince. Through the mischief of an angel, the princess is born with both a girl's body and boy's mind. Since there is no boy successor in her kingdom, Sapphire is raised as a boy, but evil ministers try to reveal her secret. Unable to put up with the kind of vicious conduct prevailing in the kingdom, Sapphire disguises herself as "Princess Knight" and wields her sword of justice. 
This is an animated version of the girls' manga featuring Sapphire's romance and adventure, which marked the first made-for-TV animated program geared towards girls in Japan.

The May issue of Akita Shoten's Bessatsu Shounen Champion magazine revealed on Monday that Spanish artist Kenny Ruiz (Telémaco, Dos Espadas) will launch a new manga in collaboration with Tezuka Productions based on various characters of Osamu Tezuka's manga. 
 In the manga's story, a robot alliance rules over 90% of the universe. The knight Sapphire is troubled over the pain of non-robots, and she makes a decision, for a new future.

An animated special made by Tezuka Productions to celebrate the new millennium. The special contained a wide variety of different characters created by Osamu Tezuka, known as the "Star System". Characters would be given awards based on their performances throughout the years. Very little about the special has surfaced online, and it's considered completely lost.
