Miwa is one of Ichigo's friends and also her classmate, however, she is unaware of the Mew Mews. One of her other friends, Moe Yanagida, is also unaware of the Mew Mews. They are seen together, most of the time, and they are in almost every episode of the anime.  In episode 23 of the anime, Keiichiro Akasaka, the baker from CaféMew Mew, helped Miwa pay for a box of tea, so she developed a crush on him. Miwa and Moe, who has a crush on Ryou Shirogane, made gifts for their crushes, as suggested by Ichigo, to win their hearts. They put a lot of effort into making the gifts but the boys rejected them, resulting in Moe and Miwa being upset.  Kish later stole Moe and Miwa's spirits and used them to create two Chimera Lovebirds. However, Ichigo defeated them, and, luckily for Moe and Miwa, Keiichiro and Ryou revealed that they actually liked their gifts. Still in love with the two boys, Moe and Miwa vowed to open a fan club for Ryou and Keiichiro. 

On her first date with the cutest boy in school, Ichigo is zapped by a mysterious ray that scrambles her DNA with that of the endangered Iriomote wildcat. The next day, Ichigo discovers that she has developed the agility (and occasionally the ears and tail) of a cat, as well as the power to transform into a pink-haired superheroine, Mew Ichigo. She and four other girls, each endowed with the genes of a different "Red Data" animal, have been selected for the top-secret Mew Project, which aims to protect the Earth from an alien menace known as Deep Blue.

Tomoko Kaneda is a Japanese voice actress and radio personality. She had worked at Aoni Production for 11 years and had worked at freelance since April 2011 and it was announced to belong to Across Entertainment in August 2011. She graduated from Department of Architecture, Kanto Gakuin University. She is a member of the voice acting unit Drops, which included fellow voice actresses Mariko Kouda, Akemi Kanda, Ai Nonaka and Ryoko Shiraishi and of the voice acting unit SD-Children along with Miyu Matsuki.

Her casting is usually that of a young child, due to her high-pitched voice. It has been reported that her voice is capable of producing sounds at a frequency beyond that of human hearing. She says in her blog's introduction, "My voice hardly changes even if I breathe in the helium gas". On November 21, 2013 she announced her marriage to actor Wataru Mori. On July 13, 2017 she gave birth to her first child, a girl.
