Madoka's classmate who, after helping Madoka rescue Kyuubey, ends up getting an offer to become a Puella Magi herself. She cares deeply for her friends, and wants to help an ill boy named Kyousuke Kamijou, whom she has a crush on. Before becoming a Puella Magi, Sayaka wields a baseball bat that Mami can enhance with magic to defend herself with while on witch hunts.

~!In order to cure Kyosuke's hand, which was damaged in an accident which robbed him of his ability to play the violin, she becomes a Puella Magi. Sayaka's weapon of choice is a sword. She also has regenerative powers stronger than anyone else due to the nature of her wish. Sayaka hates people who think only of themselves whilst hurting others and is easily provoked into a fight. After learning how Puella Magi are created, Sayaka starts to descend into despair, as she believes she's now no better than a zombie and thus cannot openly admit her love for Kyousuke. Her state of mind only worsens as one of her two best friends, Hitomi, confesses that she has feelings for Kyousuke too and makes advances on him. At the same time, she also refuses to purify her Soul Gem with Grief Seeds and neglects it to become tainted. At the end of episode 8, her Soul Gem was finally exhausted, and Sayaka turns into the witch Oktavia von Seckendorff. She dies in a battle with Sakura Kyouko, who sacrifices herself in order to not let Sayaka die alone. In episode 10, it's revealed that during Akemi Homura's third time loop, Sayaka also suffered the same fate of turning into a witch, and was killed by Homura with an explosive.!~

Sayaka's design is prominently blue, which makes her appear heroic and 'just', further reinforced by her wearing a white cape, symbolic for goodness and purity. Aside from her color scheme conveying her being a hero who fights for justice, it also foreshadows ~!her eventual melancholic downfall.!~ Sayaka also noticeably differs from the rest of the cast with her short hair. Again amplified with traditionally male aspects of her design, Sayaka is a tomboy. She would, for instance, bring a baseball bat on the girls' first hunt, whereas the traditionally feminine Madoka brought a notebook. 

Sayaka has tareme eyes, symbolizing fragility and sadness. Although this might look like it contradicts Sayaka's personality, it foreshadows ~!her losing her belief of fighting selflessly in the name of justice and starts falling into despair.!~

One night, 14-year-old Madoka Kaname has a terrible nightmare - against the backdrop of a devastated city, she witnesses a girl fight a losing battle against a dreadful being lingering above, while a cat-like magical creature tells Madoka the only way to change such tragic outcome is for her to make a contract with him and become a magical girl. 
The next day, the teen's dream seemingly becomes reality as the girl she saw in her dream - Homura - arrives at Mitakihara Middle School as a transfer student, mysteriously warning Madoka to stay just the way she is; but when later on she and her best friend Sayaka encounter the same cat-like magical creature from her dream - who introduces himself as Kyubey - the pair discovers that magical girls are real, and what's more, they can choose to become one. All they must do is sign a contract with Kyubey and agree to take on the duty to fight abstract beings called 'witches' that spread despair to the human world, and in return, each one of them will be granted any single wish they desire. However, as Homura's omen suggests, there might be far more to becoming a magical girl than Madoka and Sayaka realize...

She is primarily known for her role in Blood+ as Saya Otonashi and singing "Tsuyogari," the third ending for the anime series Konjiki No Gash Bell!! She is also known to be an amateur manga artist in Japan in her spare time. Kitamura is affiliated with talent agency Early Wing and was formerly affiliated with Kaleidoscope.

Currently works in the music unit ARTERY VEIN with Asami Imai. Also provides the voice of CUL, a Vocaloid.

The 10th anniversary online event for the Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica anime revealed that the franchise is getting a new anime film titled Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten. The film will be an official sequel to the Mahou Shoujo Madoka☆Magica: Hangyaku no Monogatari film that opened in October 2013. The tagline on the new film's visual reads, "Now, let's continue the story."
