An ally of Germany who, for some reason, likes to bully Italy (even though they are allied as well). He made a short cameo in the first season of the anime adaptation, appearing to Germany and Italy and proceeding to smack Italy in the head with a stick, saying that there was something about his face that compelled him to do so. It was shown in his cameo appearance that he has short brown hair.  He and Romania are on good terms and seem to be friends, a relationship that dates back to when they were working in Russia’s house. They appear to be close, but Romania stated that Bulgaria knows little to nothing about what he likes and all of his other quirks (Bulgaria retorting that he’ll probably never know them all no matter how hard he tries). 

Based on a popular web-released manga series by Hidekazu Himaruya, this has been described as a "cynical gag" story set in Europe in the years between WW1 and WW2 (1918-1939), using exaggerated caricatures of the different nationalities as portrayed by a gaggle of bish&#333;nen. For example, the Italia Veneziano character is into pasta and women. The Deutsche (German) bishi loves potatoes and sausages, and Nippon is an otaku boy. Installments of the manga have jumped back and forth in setting from the ancient times to modern-day geopolitics. The manga's title comes the Japanese words for "useless" (hetare) and Italy (Italia).

Think of it like WWII, except every country is a pretty boy instead. A hilariously stereotypical pretty boy. America loves burgers, Russia is into the vodka, and China has pandas and a wok. It is centered mostly around Italy, who has both a North and South character. The Hetaria portion of the name is probably mocking Italy, as Hetare means "Useless."


There are strange people in this world. If it is short, it will disappear for several days, and if it is long, it will disappear for hundreds of years. The name and personality changed, and suddenly appeared by someone's unexpected idea. Even though he is the most weird, he is loosely accepted and used by his boss.
