Oroku is a grey tanuki with black hair pinned neatly, and a red kimono. In human form, she looks almost exactly the same, but has the appearance of a middle-aged woman.
She is peacekeeper of tanuki of Tama Hills. She is rational and wise, and very strong-willed. All the tanukis respect her and call her "grandma".

Kiyokawa Nijiko was born as Hana Sekiguchi. She was a Japanese comedy actress.  In 1934 , she made her screen debut in Toho's production of Tadano Bonji: Studying Her Life. 
In 1987 , she was recognized as a Person of Merit in the Arts by the Geidankyo .
In 1990 she was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure , Fourth Class.
