Heidi is an orphan who lived with her aunt until she was 5 years old. When her aunt finds a good job which would not leave her the time to take care of a child, she decides to let Heidi live with her grandfather.

Klara Sesemann is the daughter of Mr. Sesemann from Frankfurt and later she become's one of heidi's best friend. Klara is a 12 year old girl who is regarded as an invalid and could only move around with a wheelchair, but later in the series she was able to stand up for the very first time because she got scared of a cow that was coming near her while she was reading a book with her grandmother. After a while she able to walk little by little with the help of Heidi and the others.

Alm-Onji is Heidi&#039;s grandfather. He lives in a small cabin in the alps.  One day the sister of his daughter-in-law appears and leaves Heidi with him.

A boy whose job it is to bring all the goats of the village up to the mountain everyday so that they can eat grass and stay healthy. He becomes a very important friend to Heidi.
