Born in Japan (to a Chinese father and Japanese mother) as Linn Minmei, Minmay moved in with her uncle Shaochin and aunt Feichun on South Ataria Island in hopes of finding the path to fulfill her dream of becoming a star. On the day of the Zentradi invasion, she meets Hikaru and a series of events leads to her being swept off on the SDF-1 Macross along with the rest of the surviving population from that island. While on the space fortress, Minmay wins the Miss Macross beauty pageant and is propelled into celebrity. When the Macross returns to Earth, she is the only civilian allowed off the space fortress. After her trip home in Japan (where her parents remained), Minmay returned to the fortress with her cousin Lynn Kaifunn (and Hikaru's competition for her affection) in tow. Ultimately, Minmay sings the songs that end the first war against the Zentradi.

Minmay's personality is that of any teenage girl, fun-loving, playful, full of dreams and hopes that she may realize some day. After their initial encounter during the start of the Space War I, Hikaru builds a deep infatuation on her that grows on and on throughout the series. But after Minmay wins the Miss Macross contest and becomes a distant pop idol, his feelings for her change, as she becomes too involved not only in the popular culture, but as a symbol of the human struggle against the Zentradi. Minmay also displayed insecurity and doubts about her attraction toward Hikaru and her cousin Lynn Kaifunn.

The archetypical "kimagure" (whimsical) character, Madoka is secretly in love with Kyōsuke, and is best friends with Hikaru Hiyama (who is also in love with Kyōsuke). Madoka is described as having an adult allure despite being in junior high school.

When she first meets Kyōsuke, she appears to be a pretty and sweet girl. This, however, is in stark contrast to her personality at school, where she is aloof and feared by both the male and female students as a reputed juvenile delinquent. In the TV series she is nicknamed "Madoka the Pick" due to her ability to wield a guitar pick like a shuriken. Despite her "punk" reputation, Madoka is also shown to excel at various activities both scholarly and athletic. She is able to earn high marks in school and still work a part time at Cafe ABCB (pronounced "ah-ba kah-ba").

Madoka's parents are kind-hearted but workaholic professional musicians often touring outside Japan, so she lives in a large house with her older sister. After her sister gets married and goes to live abroad with her husband, Madoka lives there alone. The story involves the eventual shedding of her tough exterior after she becomes Kyōsuke's friend, as evidenced by the changes in her life after she meets him. She gives up smoking because of him, and in the manga other characters note that she becomes friendlier and does better academically following Kyōsuke's arrival.  Creator Izumi Matsumoto reports that his inspiration for Madoka was actress Phoebe Cates.

One of Kyosuke's younger sisters, Manami is very reserved. She is depicted as the homemaker of the house--cooking meals, vacuuming and doing laundry--but it is revealed in both the manga and anime that she has a wild side that occasionally needs release. Manami's esper powers include teleportation and telekinesis. Part of her reserved nature includes avoiding excessive use of The Power unless it's absolutely necessary.        In the manga she is especially fond of Ayukawa and would like to see Kyosuke and her get together. However this manga story never made it into the anime. As such the anime version shows no such preference, though she and Kurumi at times urge Kyousuke to choose between Madoka and Hikaru. But even in the manga she's unaware of the situation between Kyosuke and Madoka. 

Born the last of five daughters to the Commander of the Royal Guards, General François Augustin Regnier de Jarjayes she is raised by her father as if she were a boy in order to take his place and command the Royal Guards serving at Court after he retires. At the age of fourteen, as soon as her training in the basic military skills is complete, Oscar is given the task to protect the Dauphine Marie Antoinette when she arrives at the French Court.  Despite being raised as if she were a boy and dressing in males' clothes, Oscar is open about being female. Even as she embraces her femininity, she uses her male position to gain freedoms that she could never have as a lady of the court. ~!She is the love interest of both André Grandier, her servant at the Jarjayes mansion and afterwards a soldier in her regiment, and Marie Antoinette, who she acts as a bodyguard to. She also earns the admiration and love of Rosalie Lamorlière, and in turn calls Rosalie her "spring breeze". Other women are infatuated with Oscar, even after she tells them she is female. She dislikes the court intrigues, but remains there out of loyalty to her father and her friend, Marie Antoinette. At one point, Oscar falls in love with Fersen, who has a forbidden love for Marie Antoinette.!~

Marie Antoinette married the Dauphin to seal the alliance between his grandfather Louis XV and her mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, when she was 14. After her marriage, she realizes that Madame du Barry, King Louis XV&#039;s mistress, is against her. The princess, horrified by what she had heard about du Barry, decides to never speak to her. Meanwhile, she meets Count von Fersen, who becomes her lover.    

Madame du Barry, always plotting against Marie Antoinette and Oscar, fulfils her desire to be greeted by her. After the death of Louis XV, Madame du Barry is condemned to die. Marie Antoinette, after several conflicts with her husband, starts feeling lonely. Fersen, who had left France on Oscar&#039;s advice, returns. Rumors swirl about the Queen and the Count, and Fersen leaves again. A depressed Marie Antoinette befriends the Duchess de Polignac. Polignac leads Marie Antoinette to her downfall.    

Marie Antoinette is described as a &quot;lively, silly girl of shoujo manga&quot;.

Princess of Torumekia, youngest daughter of the Vai Emperor.      In the anime, she lost one of her arms as a child during an Ohmu attack, and is driven by a desire for revenge against the giant insects.  She intends to wipe the Sea of Corruption off the face of the earth, by any means necessary.  While she is not presented as completely evil, she is definitely an antagonist.    In the manga, she has a much more complicated role, more of an antihero/ally than an antagonist.  She is mostly driven by a desire for revenge against her father and three older half-brothers, whom she hates and blames for the fate of her mother.  She commands the Torumekian Third Army, whom she trained personally; she is devoted to her men, and they are unswervingly loyal to her.  Despite her ferocity in battle, she has a nobility of character that earns her the respect of both Nausicaa and Master Yupa.  While she admires Nausicaa's pacifist ideals, she sees herself as inescapably destined to walk the path of bloodshed.

The Princess of the Valley of Wind. She is clever, resourceful, and a skilled swordswoman. She is a windrider, who can read and utilize the wind well, and flies a "Mehve", a glider with an engine. She has an empathetic ability and can even communicate with insects from the Sea of Corruption. As a next chieftain of the Valley, she joins Kushana's army, but the gruesome reality of the war devastates her. She desperately tries to stop mass killing and suffering, and her quest for the truth leads her to the most unimaginable places, and to the biggest secret of the world.
