Mazinger Z:  Kouji Kabuto is the protagonist of the show, an average student with great skill in driving motorcycles. He lived with his brother Shiro and his grandfather Juuzo, after his parents were apparently killed in a lab accident caused by his grandfather.  One day, Koji receives a call from his grandfather to meet him at his mountain cabin. Just as Kouji arrives however, the cabin explodes. Searching the remains, he uncovers a hidden doorway into the mountain and inside, he finds his dying grandfather who tells him with his dying wish to pilot "Mazinger Z" and stop a man named Dr. Hell.  Kouji continues into the hidden lab and discovers the huge, humanoid robot Mazinger Z, and the hover pilder which is used to control it. Honoring his grandfather's last wish, he joins up with the Photon Power Labs and fights the forces of Dr. Hell with his Mazinger Z.  Shin Mazinger:   The protagonist of the series. Kouji lives with his younger brother Shiro and his grandfather Juuzo in their manor in Atami. Though his grandfather caused the accident that apparently killed his parents, Kouji feels no ill-will towards him and in fact holds him in high regard, attacking anyone who dares insults his grandfather.   During the Ashura Corps first attack on Atami, Juuzo sends out the hover pilder to Kouji and tells him to use it to quickly fly home. Just as he reaches the manor, it is utterly obliterated as Juuzo sends out his life's work from his underground lab, the super robot Mazinger Z. After docking the pilder with Mazinger's head, Juuzo tells Kouji that with Mazinger, he has the power to do anything he wants with the world - he could even become a god or the devil. As the ultimate penance for accidentally killing his parents, Juuzo will make his grandson superhuman. Having been granted this new-found power, Kouji decides that he will use it to fight the Kabuto family's long-time enemy - Dr. Hell - and his army of mechanical beasts.

Since he was the eldest son, despite having all the attentions, he was always alone until he met Edgar, a human in a nearby village, who soon became his best and only friend. When Edgar died, due the big fire in the village, Shuu felt it like he was unable to save him and blamed himself. He's still unaware that the fire was set up by his brother Reiji out of jealousy. Because of his past experience, Shuu tends to push Yui away a lot, at first, as he says that humans die too easily. !~  He's voiced by Toriumi Kousuke in the Drama CD.

Comfrey is a warrior from Universe 9 and a member of Team Universe 9.

He found that it always made him feel more comfortable to dress like a girl, but that only gave his parents even more to apologize for. Since he looks so much like a girl, that's what [Tohru](https://anilist.co/character/207) thought when she first saw him, until he accidently transformed. Somehow, Tohru convinced him that he does have a reason to live, he just hasn't found it yet. Shigure likes to play with Ritsu's insecurities and gullibility, much as he does his editor, [Mitsuru](https://anilist.co/character/9759).

~!When the two meet, they realize they have this in common. In the final chapter of the manga, Ritsu tells Kagura, while giving her one of his women's kimonos, that he has asked Mitsuru on a date, and in a bonus story in the first fan-book, he and Mitsuru are a couple.!~  

Natsuki Takaya derived his name from the eighth month, odakaritsuki or "rice harvest month," which is the month of the monkey, of the traditional Japanese calendar. In an author's note, Takaya said that she regretted how little role Ritsu played in the main story.

Shou (ショウ Shō) is a childhood friend of Erza, having known her during the days she and their friends were kept as slaves and forced to build the Tower of Paradise. As he was is the youngest of the group, he the most sensitive to whats going on around him. He also the closest to Erza calling her &quot;nee-san&quot; (big sister).     

Bandai is the gang leader of the Soy Sauce Middle School.

A frequent side character. He is somehow a delinquent with as seen when he fakes being sick to skip the School Year Opening Ceremony and then puts the blame on Nendō and Kusuo, and gets himself into convoluted schemes with his circle of friends; but overall he just is a nuisance to deal with.
