Buntarou is a hard-working and popular young man with many friends and strikes good vibes with those he meets. Apart from going to high school, he also works part-time at a ramen shop after school for income since he lives alone.

The series centers around him, his fate, and the efforts of his friends to fulfill the wishes of a letter from the future.

Kakeru is initially shown to be quiet and reserved, however, once Hiroto Suwa and the others invite him to join them on their walk home and hang out with him more, he seems to open up and enjoy himself. He enjoys video games. Though he puts up a happy front around his friends and family, he hides his true feelings often and is incredibly depressed over his mother's death/suicide, in which he blames himself for it happening. As the story progresses, he finally lets some of his feelings loose to Hiroto Suwa and Naho Takamiya, though even after the incident, he seems to still believe his feelings are only a burden to others. He is also very hard on himself on a consistent basis. He claims to think about killing himself every day. He is also a skilled runner and is the fastest runner in his class.

A tantou made by Awataguchi Yoshimitsu. One of the Toushirou brothers. The origin of his name comes from the stone medicine mortar that he cut, earning the reputation as a sword with "an extraordinary cutting ability but will not kill its master." Because he's raised for the battlefield, he has some medical science knowledge.

Yui's older brother and a member of the idol unit WITH. Outwardly Shogo is charming and kind. He loves to excite his fans and relishes being chased after by them. He is a quick thinker and manages to turn poor situations into good publicity for himself, but he has a short temper when it comes to someone making him look bad or getting in his way.

Towards Yui he is an emotional bully. He often claims to be embarrassed because of her and only shows his "true" personality around her.

 He is a student of Salt Middle School and the president of the Body Improvement Club.

He is a second-year middle school student and a member of the Telepathy Club.

Not wanting to get bored, he avoids seeing his first owner, and visits his second owner, Lord Iemitsu instead. Along the way, Aizen Kunitoshi finds out that he was given as a blessing of protection for Iemitsu’s grandson. Aizen then realizes that the "Aizen Myo'ou" he embodies is meant to represent compassion and love rather than fury and strength. He uses this knowledge to focus on his own talents to become a better sword.

Because of this, he becomes angry at Ryuu during the War Game for using them.

A 21-year-old man and low-ranked government official who lived in the same town as Appare. He is a master of cooking, cleaning, and laundry, due to having lost his mother early on and having to take care of his father and sister. He is a straightforward man who is often prone to worrying about his friends, and this often leads to him being led around by Appare. Though initiated into the hantsuki ittou-ryu style of swordsmanship, he doesn't get into fights often. According to his father, he has been promised in marriage to a beautiful fiance which he has never seen.
