Headstrong, idealistic and impulsive, 25-year-old Akagi can be seen as the heart and brawn of the three Dai-Guard pilots. Beforehand, he was merely an office worker for the 21st Century Defense Corporation, but he manages to achieve his dreams of becoming a giant robot pilot. During the return of the Heterodyne, he and his two coworkers Ibuki and Aoyama become the pilots of Dai-Guard. Akagi loves his job a little too much and sticks out among his fellow workers as the most enthusiastic one. However, he is usually at odds with the bureaucratic methods of his company and his superiors. Akagi always has the best intentions, even though they usually get him into trouble. A young man with a strong feeling for justice, and who worships Kira and refers to him as "God". He is prepared to help Kira by any means, even if it means sacrificing his own life.

Mikami works as a lawyer, and was bullied for standing up for what is right when he was younger in school. He was an excellent student and did well academically. He became a prosecuting agent to impose the punishment that criminals deserved. Mikami lives alone and likes to work out consistently, even on New Year's Day. He's maniacally rigorous and punctual, and overall he's a talented and intelligent person who has the tendency to act in a way that is described as "Kira-like".

Sakamoto is a former member of the Joi. He is a good-natured man and optimistic to the point of being ridiculous, even in the most dangerous situations. His favorite phrase is "AHAHA! It must be _____". He also has a tendency to misspell names; he calls Gintoki "Kintoki". Gintoki often corrects him, citing that if he were named Kintoki, they would be in some kind of hentai anime (because 'Kin' from 'Kintoki' instead of 'Gin' would make the title 'Kintama', which means 'testicles' instead of 'Gintama', which means 'silver soul').  

Despite his goofy nature, Sakamoto is actually a successful businessman in the galaxy. He believes that business is a way of protecting his country. He has a private, well-equipped defensive business fleet. He believes that sacrifices should be made for the good of the community, which is why he chose to abandon his comrades on Earth to travel into space. Sakamoto is shown to be skilled with a pistol in an anime filler episode.

His name is based on the historical character Sakamoto Ryouma. He speaks in Tosa-ben, much like the inspiration for his character.

Tatsuki (known as Tatsukichi to Ran) is a wild and kind student at Machida West High School, and he calls himself "the parapara king of Machida" (also known as "Machida Black", since the "kuro" in his last name means "black"). In the manga he is also called Blackwell (the literal translation of his surname). He is often nicknamed "Monkey Boy" since his personality is very similar to that of a monkey.   He becomes Ran's boyfriend, although she studiously avoids anything remotely approaching intimacy. Because of this, at times Tatsuki feels that he should not be Ran's boyfriend, and often feels that Ran does show it that she's his girlfriend. He likes to use English words and phrases in his conversations. Sometimes he says a phrase in English then he will say then same phrase in Japanese, or he will say a phrase that the first part is in Japanese, and then the second part in English, and then he will say the same phrase again, but switch what is in Japanese and what is in English (example: "Black nichiyōbi", "Black Sunday", and then "Kuroi Sunday"). He also likes to call Yuya "brother" in English.

Watanuki (a name meaning "April 1" in kanji) is known for having both a volatile and caring personality. Depending upon the person he talks to, his emotions tend to be overly exaggerated. He lives alone because his parents died when he was young, but harder than these conditions is the fact that his everyday life is plagued with strange spirits that only he can see, and they are drawn to him. Apparently this was inherited- it is noted that his blood smells good to spirits.

One average day, while Watanuki is being chased by a legion of spirits, he comes across a strange house which the spirits are repelled by. He feels compelled to enter, and there meets Yuuko, who claims that it is a store which grants wishes in exchange for a price. Watanuki asks for the spirits to stop chasing him, and Yuuko agrees to granting it but only if Watanuki works as a helper in the shop until he accumulates enough time for her to make his wish come true. This is the beginning of Watanuki's part time job. As time goes by, Watanuki meets many different people who help him to develop and change his opinions on the world, and also to understand the world from Yuuko's perspective, which also helps him to mature. 

~!When half way through both the anime and manga he loses the sight in his right eye due to a spider's grudge curse, his left iris turns a dull milky grey color. After failing to retrieve his sight in this eye , he receives half of Doumeki's right eye's sight, which causes his right eye to turn a dark green with a brownish tint (in the Anime), or gold-brown (in the Manga).!~

Katsuhiko Jinnai (陣内 克彦 Jinnai Katsuhiko), manages to win the Student Body Presidential election by promising student government funds to campus clubs and organizations that voted for him.    When Makoto catches wind of this and plans are made for him to testify against Jinnai (who is called &quot;Jinnai&quot; by everyone except his sister), the egocentric, power-hungry and soon-to-be-impeached Student Body President attempts to thwart the process by attacking Makoto, intending to keep him tied up until a technicality in the bylaws prevents him from being thrown out of office. Before he can execute his plan, however, he&#039;s sent to El-Hazard, and once there encounters the Bugrom, a race of human-sized insectoid beings ruled by Queen Diva.    Jinnai&#039;s power granted to him by the trip is the ability to communicate with the Bugrom, allowing him to become their military commander under their belief that he is the messenger from God sent to lead the Bugrom to victory. A skilled tactician, he is able to reorganize the Bugrom forces into an effective army and comes close to conquering El-Hazard.    Although Jinnai is a power-hungry egomaniac, he&#039;s not without some level of humanity. When Galus attempts to stop Makoto and the others from halting the Eye of God&#039;s apocalyptic malfunction, he takes the leader of the Phantom Tribe by surprise with the help of a Bugrom soldier. Although Jinnai effectively comes to Makoto and Nanami&#039;s rescue, he does so more for the fact that a &quot;true ruler doesn&#039;t destroy the land he wishes to conquer.&quot; Jinnai has a very distinctive laugh.    Jinni suffers from an obsession with Makoto that borders of the psychotic. Over the course of both series, he consistently blames Makoto for essentially every single failure and disappointment he experiences. His sense of his own history is a montage of misfortune, the chief architect of which is Makoto. Though generally megalomaniacal, one of his primary motivations in gaining power is to subsequently gain the ability to best, or, even kill him.    Jinnai in The Wanderers    Jinnai does not change much in the transition from OVA to TV series, either, but he seems to treat Ifurita with more care. Although he&#039;s threatened with impeachment from his position as Student Body President at the beginning of the series and Makoto plays no direct role in the trial, he is paranoid that Makoto will replace him as president once he is kicked out of office. Manten is a Thunder Demon and the younger brother of Hiten. Manten's head resembled a cross between a shark and a seal, and for some reason his lack of hair really bothered him. Apparently the reason why Hiten looks human and Manten looks like a monster is that their parents were two different types of demon.

Sagara Sanosuke left home at an early age to join the Sekihō Army (Sekihō-tai), leaving behind his father (Kamishimoemon), his mother (Naname), and his younger sister (Uki) who adored him. He would return home years later to discover that his mother was dead, having died a couple of years after the birth of his younger brother, Ota, who immediately began to admire Sanosuke for his bravery and boldness. Sanosuke would also find out that his family name was now Higashidani, although he would never use it himself. His sister, after Sanosuke's disappearance and then her mother's death, became overprotective of her younger brother and father, who worked as a local merchant and farmer with the infamy of being a local fighter. Ota, after Sanosuke leaves his family again, would eventually follow his brother's advice and train at the Kamiya Kasshin-Ryū style dojo to become strong. The Sekihoutai fought for the imperial alliance at the end of the Tokugawa regime and Sanosuke admired his captain, Sagara Sōzō and took the family name Sagara from him. The Sekihō Army were on assignment to spread word of the halving of taxes proclaimed by the revolution. However, when the revolutionary government encountered financial problems, they labeled the Sekihoutai as frauds to bury their promises. This setup was engineered by Shindō Tatewaki, a former officer in the imperial alliance. The Sekihoutai were designated scapegoats and to be executed; Sanosuke was the only survivor, other than his friend Tsukioka Katsuhiro. The exact circumstances of Sōzō's death differ between the animated version and the manga; in the manga Sanosuke realized he had been killed after seeing his decapitated head on display as a warning, while in the anime a wounded Sōzō pushed Sanosuke to safety off a cliff in order to save him before dying himself. Full of anger and bitterness, Sanosuke made a living as a fighter-for-hire who bore the nickname "Zanza" derived from his weapon, the zanbatō. Sanosuke's sword, the heaviest katana ever made in the Rurouni Kenshin universe, originates from the Ōnin Struggle. Due to wear the blade no longer has an edge. Sanosuke uses the sword to smash and crush. Hiruma Kihei and Gohei hire Sanosuke to kill Himura Kenshin, but after the former assassin defeats Sanosuke and Sanosuke learns of the truth of Kenshin's no-kill approach, Sanosuke becomes a valuable ally. He later adopts a boxing-like fighting skill, known for the strength of his right fist. Because the zanbatō broke during the fight, Sanosuke no longer wields it on a regular basis, using only one more time in the manga to defend the Kamiya dojo during the Jinchu arc. At the end of the manga series, Sanosuke leaves Japan to avoid becoming wrongfully arrested and travels the world. He is not heard from until five years later during a reunion of the Kenshin-gumi, in which he tells them via a letter that he is in Mongolia and will stay there for a while before heading back to Japan.
