Mikako is a junior high school girl who is in love with Terao Noboru, but was chosen to join a space expedition. While in space, Mikako always texted Noboru, even in dangerous situations. But still, Mikako was going far, far away from Earth. So far that her text messages would only reach Noboru after 8, 9, 10 years. She missed Earth and Noboru very much.

A spirit girl (Vestal sprite) who has a crush on Watanuki.   Zashiki-warashi are prone to mischievous thoughts, though this one is actually quite shy and sweet and very prone to crying (those who make her cry will be attacked by her guardians, a group of tengu-karasu). She lives on a mountain with pure spiritual energy and, as a result, is vulnerable to evil energy. Chisa Yomoda is Lain's classmate. She's the one that initially gets Lain involved with the Wired.
