He preached an unusual variant of Quincy philosophy advocating cooperation with the Shinigami. Sōken tried to make amends with the Shinigami by advocating a new system of response to hollow attacks: Quincy would be the first-response squad, protecting humans from hollows until the Shinigami arrived to dispatch the hollow, thus maintaining the spiritual balance between the worlds that was being destroyed by the Quincy.     However, his proposal was never accepted, despite several attempts. He was eventually killed in a hollow attack, as the Shinigami arrived to late to save his life. During the rescue of Rukia Kuchiki, Mayuri Kurotsuchi reveals to Uryū that this was his doing; he delayed the Shinigami meant to protect Sōken so that he could study Sōken's soul for his research.     According to a reflection of a photograph seen in Uryu's glasses, all that was left of him in the end was his head. His death is the primary reason Uryū hates the Shinigami, although after learning of the conspiracy Uryū's hatred has become less for Shinigami in general than for Mayuri in particular, despite the fact that the Captain saved his life during the assault on Hueco Mundo. Dr. Nako (often simply called "Doctor") is a doctor from Cocoyashi Village. Although a relatively minor character overall, he was one of the major characters from Nami's childhood.  He plays a major role in the flashback, while he plays a minor role in the present. He aids the crowd in fighting the Arlong Pirates and later tends the wounds of Zoro, Luffy, Yosaku, and Johnny. Nako grumbled about the crew having no doctor which gave Luffy an idea to find a doctor of their own. He then put the pinwheel tattoo on Nami's left arm to cover her stab scars.  He wears a bandana with a red cross, a common symbol for medical personnel, (which is edited out in the English anime) and a sunglasses.


Kyou was the Leader of Sekichiku City's Gym. He is a student of ninjutsu who specializes in Poison-type Pokémon. He handed out the Soul Badge to Trainers who defeated him. He became a member of the Indigo Elite Four some time after the events of Generation I, but before the events of Generation II, thus leaving his daughter Anzu in charge of the Sekichiku Gym.

Kyou is dedicated to perfecting his battling techniques. He attempts to confuse and disorientate his opponents to get the upper hand during a match.

Dr. Seger is a Rocket-dan scientist, who is shown to view his work seriously. However, at times of great discovery, he can become excited, as seen when he first analyzed the Meteonite and when his resurrection of Tirtouga led to the complete opening of the Time Gate. He is also practical-minded, ordering retreats when missions are failing without trying unreasonably to salvage them.

Gorn is a being made up of the collective mind of the MME. It is filled with hatred for humanity and a strong desire to prove that the MME have surpassed humans. Directly controlling the MME forces from its heavily defended citadel, it desires to take its war against humanity to every outpost in the solar system until none remain alive. It speaks of the glorious future that awaits when mechanical life comes into its own and claims the solar system. Although a machine, Gorn is not devoid of emotional attachments and has a special desire to see Sandy suffer because she is the daughter of the man who uncovered the alien ruins on the Moon. When Sandy confronts Gorn at the heart of its citadel it is forced to consider ideas it cannot handle and self destructs rather than deal with the consequences.
