In the year 2015, the Angels, huge, tremendously powerful, alien war machines, appear in Tokyo for the second time. The only hope for Mankind's survival lies in the Evangelion, a humanoid fighting machine developed by NERV, a special United Nations agency. Capable of withstanding anything the Angels can dish out, the Evangelion's one drawback lies in the limited number of people able to pilot them. Only a handful of teenagers, all born fourteen years ago, nine months after the Angels first appeared, are able to interface with the Evangelion. One such teenager is Shinji Ikari, whose father heads the NERV team that developed and maintains the Evangelion. Thrust into a maelstrom of battle and events that he does not understand, Shinji is forced to plumb the depths of his own inner resources for the courage and strength to not only fight, but to survive, or risk losing everything.

In this alternate retelling of Neon Genesis Evangelion everything is different. Shinji and Asuka have grown up together as childhood friends, Rei is the new kid at school, Misato is their teacher, NERV is just beginning to assemble teenagers for their experiments, and the second impact never happened. The story proceeds as a romance rather than an action series, with love triangles a-plenty.

The series is the "first official super-deformed series" based on Neon Genesis Evangelion. The Gainax/Khara franchise spinoff spoofs the psychological science fiction drama by reimagining the characters as classmates in Tokyo-3's Nerv School, headed by Principal Gend&#333; Ikari and Misato-sensei. The student body includes three different Rei "sisters," the EVA-01 mobile weapon reimagined as the school bully Evanch&#333;, and the ill-fated Jet Alone robot as JA-ko, a "hidden character" in the form of a shy android girl.

What would have happened if the Human Instrumentality Project–from the final two episodes of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime–had never reached fruition? This official light novel series explores just that, allowing Shinji Ikari and the pilots around him to age three years and face a different future. This alternate ending began serialization in Japan a decade ago, and remains the only light novel series for the legendary franchise. With the original 1990s anime series having its very first streaming release on Netflix in Spring 2019, these light novels are a perfect expansion for fans new and old.
