A Count and a member of the Orbital Knights. He is a middle aged man with medium length brown hair and eyes. He wears the traditional Orbital Knights uniform which consists of a burgundy coat and trousers, a white dress shirt underneath, and knee high black boots.  During the first Earth-Mars War, he was sent to Tanegashima in his Kataphrakt, the Dioscuria, along side his fiancé to fight. However, when Heaven's Fall occurred, Saazbaum barely managed to escape alive with the help of Dr. Troyard at the cost of his fiancé's life. After this tragedy, Saazbaum blames everything on the Royal Family of Vers which ignited him to take part in the assassination attempt on [Princess Asseylum](https://anilist.co/character/88175/Asseylum-Vers-Allusia).

Count Saazbaum appears to be a blood thirsty and violent man who seeks the destruction of all Terrans and Earth. However, he has another objective which is to seek vengeance on the Royal Family of Vers after causing the incident that killed his fiancé. Count Saazbaum adopts Slaine and treats him respectfully as his father was the one who saved his life. He holds a great amount of trust towards him, going as far to tell him his own goals and vengeance towards the Royal Family of Vers.

He is the pilot of the Martian Kataphrakt Dioscuria and it's successor, the Dioscuria II.

In 1972, the Apollo 17 mission found a hypergate to Mars on the surface of the moon. Upon landing, astronauts discovered a enchanted utility later referred to as 'Aldnoah', giving the astronauts a status of superiority. Soon, many humans have relocated to Mars, and have adapted to the name 'Martians'. After Princess Asseylum, a royal Martian princess, descends onto Earth in an attempt to create a treaty between both planets, a war breaks out between Earth and Mars, and Martian soldiers begin to descend from the sky, riding steel giants, intent on exterminating humanity.

Seeking for revenge, Count Saazbaum, a Martian, attacked the Earth. Later on, the war between the Terrans and Martians ended with Earth's Terrans gaining the victory. However, nineteen months later, the battle between them continues. Martians still continues to invade the Earth and the Terrans to protect it.

He is known for playing tough or grouchy men in dubbed anime and video games. His career includes Hotohori in Fushigi Yūgi and Jin in Samurai Champloo. He also played numerous cameos and minor characters in Rurouni Kenshin, in addition to the major character of Hajime Saito. He also does Don Patch in Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo as well as Gabumon and other voices in Digimon.  According to Anime News Network, Thornton has the most credits of any male voice actor and he is second in total voice actor credits only next to Wendee Lee. He has been in nearly two hundred voice-over productions for Japanese animation.  Thornton is also well-known for having played many different minor voice roles throughout the Power Rangers franchise (and similar series such as VR Troopers and Masked Rider).  Thornton has also had experience with ADR direction. Currently, he is co-directing the ADR for the popular anime series Bleach alongside Wendee Lee.
