Sanae is Nagisa&#039;s mother. Normally she&#039;s very childish and a cry-baby, but when needed she can be very strong-willed and dependable. She runs the Furukawa Bakery with her husband Akio. She often tries out strange concepts to make breads that are anything but edible and never get sold. Outside of the bakery, she tutors children. She&#039;s quite proud of the way people often mistake her for Nagisa&#039;s older sister because of her youthful appearance.    ~!Sanae plays a larger role in After Story, often comes to Tomoya&#039;s aid when Nagisa is sick and needs to be accompanied, especially during Nagisa&#039;s pregnancy. Before being a baker at the Furukawa Bakery, she was a junior-high teacher, and had to quit her job due to Nagisa&#039;s health. Sanae is the mastermind behind Tomoya and Ushio&#039;s trip to the flower cape, in hope for them to reconcile. She knows Shino, Tomoya&#039;s grandmother in his father&#039;s side, although it is never revealed how they met. !~

Tomoya is a bitter, third year high school student. His mother passed away, causing his father to resort to alcohol and gambling. Tomoya is distant with his father and has become a delinquent in the years since his mother's death. Walking to school, he meets Nagisa Furukawa who is a year older but is repeating the grade due to illness. She is alone, as most of her friends have moved on. The two begin hanging out, and as time goes by, Tomoya finds his life shifting in a new direction.

Clannad is set in a high-school located in some Japanese town. Okazaki Tomoya is a third-year student who doesn't take his studies seriously. Always late for class, he's seen as a delinquent by the rest of his classmates who are busy preparing for their entrance examinations. Needless to say, he hasn't too many close friends either. 
Tomoya seems not to mind too - until one day he meets a girl, Furukawa Nagisa, who is left alone without friends on this school, because everybody she knew already graduated. What a clumsy girl, he thinks at first. But he can't leave her alone and so, while helping her, he meets a few other girls from his school. Although he doesn't care much about them at first, he soon opens his heart to them as they get to know each other better.

A few months have passed since Tomoya declared his love to Nagisa, and his life keeps moving forward as he continues to meet a variety of new people, expanding his world in the process. While Tomoya's world continues to expand, his and Nagisa's relationship is entering a new phase, and neither of them is quite sure where it will take them. Through his relationship with Nagisa, Tomoya begins to understand the meaning and importance of family. 
 
But as Tomoya and Nagisa begin a family of their own, they are faced with many hardships along the way in Clannad: After Story
