A student in Hope's Peak Academy's Class 78th, and a participant of the Killing School Life. 

Befitting of a Super High School Level Hall Monitor, Ishimaru is righteous and values order above all else. He is also a hard worker, believing that one can achieve anything through hard work. In fact, he earned his title by the same means too. Due to his extreme dedication to studying and proper conduct, he has difficulties in making friends and could not even hold a ‘normal’ conversation with another person. Ishimaru is very expressive and intense in his manner of speech.  

A group of 15 elite high school students are gathered at a very special, high class high school. To graduate from this high school essentially means you'll succeed in life, but graduating is very difficult. The school is presided over by a bear called Monokuma, and he explains to them that their graduation hinges around committing a murder. The only way to graduate is to kill one of your classmates and get away with it. If the other classmates discover the identity of the killer, the killer is the only one executed. However, if they fail to catch the killer, only the killer graduates and the others are annihilated. Which of the 15 will survive the bloodbath to come?

An adaptation of the game mostly told from the perspectives of the victims and killers, so we can learn more about their motives.

Each year, the elite Hope’s Peak Academy selects only the most gifted and talented students to enroll... plus one ordinary student, chosen by lottery. Makoto Naegi was that lucky person—or so he thought! When he shows up for class, he finds the elite students are a bizarre cast of oddballs under the ruthless authority of a robot teddy bear principal, Monokuma. The bear lays down the school rules: the only way out of Hope’s Peak is to not only murder another student... but get away with it, as every murder is followed by a tribunal where the surviving students cross-examine each other!

A spin-off gag manga adaption Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. It focuses on the Class Trials for both games and reverses the roles of the murderers and victims for humorous results.

An anthology light novel focusing on the characters from Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Super Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Consists of illustrations and short stories about their daily lives.

Based on the games of the same name, a variety of authors and artists write a large offering of short stories starring the various characters featured in the games. The stories range from being lovingly heartfelt, packed full of comedy and gags or being downright evil or messed up sometimes!


Chisa Yukizome begins her job as homeroom teacher for Hope's Peak Academy's 77th Class of Ultmate students. Meanwhile, Hajime Hinata, a student of the school's Reserve Course for students without talent, prepares to undergo an experiment to make him the Ultimate Hope. What follows is a series of tragic events which lead to the birth of the Remnants of Despair and the realization of "The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History."
