Heidemarie W. Schnaufer is based on German pilot Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer. Her archetype's nickname was The Night Ghost of St. Trond, which is the reference for her story in the manga Kimi to Tsunagaru Sora.  She is Karlsland's top night witch (Nachthexe). By the end of 1944, she was nearing a shot-down count of 100, all of which were scored in air combat at night. Together with a magic Radar Antenna, a tell-tale feature of a night witch, she has a special night vision ability which allows her to see clearly through the darkness by starlight. As a child, she had trouble controlling this night vision ability, and thus went through much of her life indoors in dimly lit conditions. At the age of 10, she was admitted into a witch training program, and as she learned to control her powers, her talent as a night witch blossomed. Soon, her night vision ability would no longer spontaneously activate, but the visual neurons which had already been damaged could not be healed even with magic, so she usually wears glasses with a strong prescription. As if in response to her lonely childhood, she has a strong desire to make friends with others her age, which is surprising, especially in a night witch. A currently serving night-fighter air infantryman in 1944. Once she reaches 100 victories, she will be promoted to Squadron Leader, becoming Karlsland's youngest combat air wing commander (Geschwaderkommodore). In 1945, Yoshika Miyafuji, who lost her witch powers during the Strike Witches' last assignment, has been studying to become a doctor. Shizuka Hattori, one of her cadets in the Imperial Fuso Navy, then arrives to deliver a message: Yoshika is to be transferred for study abroad in Europe. 
When their enemy reappears more powerful than ever, the Strike Witches must form up once again. But can they do it without Yoshika Miyafuji?

Yoshika Miyafuji spends her days peacefully after returning to her hometown. Her former superior officer Mio Sakamoto and others arranged for Yoshika to study abroad at a medical school in Europe. Yoshika returns to Europe with Shizuka Hattori, who was Sakamoto's student at the naval academy. As Yoshika returns to Europe and new signs of Neuroi emerge, the other former members of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, who were scattered in various locations, also begin to gather again. A powerful Neuroi then appears before Yoshika and Shizuka.

"Noblesse Oblige" - The obligation of nobles. This addition to the World Witches franchise focuses on the 506th Joint Fighter Wing; a squadron of witches tasked with protecting innocent people from the Neuroi following the liberation of Gallia. These Witches are referred to as the "Noble Witches" because of their social status and their dedication to serving the needs of the less fortunate.

An expansion of the Strike Witches series, World Witches - Contrail of Witches details the short stories of various witches from areas of the European front of the Neuroi War.
