The protagonist of Infinite Stratos. He is a first year student at the IS academy. His older sister, Chifuyu, is a legendary IS pilot. The siblings were abandoned by their parents at a young age and Ichika was raised by his sister thereafter. Ichika has a habit of personally assessing the situation with interior monologues as well as being easily out-guessed about his tactics. As the first (and thus far only) male IS pilot, his new reputation has made him somewhat famous. He pilots the Byakushiki IS. He is also considered to be fairly dense as he doesn't realize the feelings of those around him (especially the girls) despite repeated attempts and even open hints.

Japan engineered an armed powered exoskeleton "Infinite Stratos" (IS) and it became the mainstream of weapons. Since only women can operate IS, women dominate the society over men. Orimura Ichika is a 15 year old boy and accidentally touches an IS placed in the IS pilot training school. He is found to be the only man who can operate IS and forced to enter the training school. Ichika's busy school life surrounded by girls has begun.

On a hot day of summer vacation, Charlotte's plan to spend time alone with Ichika at his house is somewhat ruined when Cecilia gets the same idea, later followed by Houki, Lingyin and Laura. In the near future, Japan creates an armored suit called Infinite Stratos, IS for short, for outer space usage but was later used as a military weapon until it was finally incorporated as a new sport. The one drawback to the IS is that it can only be piloted by a female, or so people thought, until Orimura Ichika came along. As the younger brother of the famous pilot, Orimura Chihuyu, who represented the nation of Japan and went undefeated her whole professional career, Ichika is the only male in the entire world who can pilot an IS. He was accepted into the IS Academy where all the students are female except for him and he has to train to become a pilot. He is surprised to see that his teacher is none other than his sister Chihiyu and is almost annoyed by all the attention he is getting as the only guy on campus. Almost every girl around him is fighting against each other to gain Ichika’s heart and with all the flirting going around, he barely has time to master using his IS.

Note: The light novel stopped publishing on 2011 and resumed its publication a year later under a new label, Overlap Bunko. Due to this, the light novel changed illustrators, with CHOCO being the new illustrator of the series.
