Holder of the Heart Lamp, and the sole remaining Exorcist, thus the Great Exorcist of his generation. After his master's death, he descended Mt. Hua to find his Protector and restore the missing spiritual qi of Heavens and Earth. Chen Xing is described as having "pure, beautiful rosy lips an a high nose bridge".

Chen Xing is a rather curious, trusting, and naive teenager, having only recently descended the mountain at the beginning of the novel under the protection of Iuppiter, allowing him to escape misfortune. He is also a nerd, liking to recite encyclopedic definitions and tell drawn-out stories, sometimes annoying his listeners in the conversation. Though overall optimistic, he is burdened by the knowledge of his exceedingly short lifespan and is sometimes hesitant about forming deep relationships as a result, not wanting to make those people even sadder by his inevitable early death.

It has been three hundred years since magic disappeared from the Divine Land. Chen Xing is the last Great Exorcist—a young man with a tenuous grip on magic whose life is destined to end on his twentieth birthday. As whispers about the return of the demonic entity known as Mara echo across the land, Chen Xing is burdened with a daunting task: to seek out his fated counterpart, the Protector Martial God, and together, to save the world.

Centuries ago, the land of China was full of magical spirits. Those who could utilize the power of spirits were called Exorcists. Their duty was to prevent the Great Diablo, a demon that shows up once every millennium, from plaguing the world. In the Han Dynasty, however, in a catastrophe known as The Oblivion, all magical spirits vanished overnight. Having lost their powers, Exorcists became a thing of the past. 
 
Later, during the incessant war between the Qin and Jin Kingdoms, the resentful spirits of those who died in vain became the nutrients triggering the revival of the Great Diablo. In order to stop the demon, Chen Xing, the last surviving Exorcist, starts a journey with "Lamp of the Heart", a magical artifact that lives in his soul. He is to travel to Xiangyang City to find Xiangshu, who is destined to join him and defeat the demon.
