Mion is the oldest kid in Keiichi's class. As the elder, she is the class president and everyone looks up to her as the leader. She acts like a perverted tomboy and calls herself old man, but has a hidden girlish side. Mion is next in line to be the head of the Sonozaki household, one of the Three Families which holds tremendous influence in Hinamizawa. Often when playing games with her fellow club members she is known for her ruthlessness, often coming up with the most embarrassing penalties for the losers.  Mion also serves as the leader of the main characters' gaming club.

Continuing from the first series, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai begins to shed some light on the dark mysteries prevalent in the preceding season. The young group of friends in the town of Hinamizawa continue to enter terrible conflicts with one another in their never ending summer of 1983, often ending with the brutal murder of one of their numbers. Furude Rika, with the help of her spiritual friend Hanyuu, tackles challenges over and over, trying her best to keep their lives from coming to a tragic end. The story takes place in a world where fantastic beasts called "Spirals" are born from isolation. Those who can defeat the beasts are called "Periods." Haru is an apprentice Period who belongs to the Arc End 8th Branch. However, after a mysterious theft incident, there is an economic collapse, and the Arc End headquarters abandons the 8th Division, leaving only three Periods left, including Haru. Haru and the other two Periods start their work to rebuild the 8th Division.

Meakashi-hen is the answer arc corresponding to Watanagashi-hen. Meakashi-hen consists of events very similar to those of Watanagashi-hen told from the perspective of Shion Sonozaki, with only a few minor variations. In this chapter, the audience sees the true reason for the criminal's murderous actions in Watanagashi-hen—a lost love. Satoshi Houjou is first physically met in this arc, unlike the others where he is only mentioned. The first hints of that which ties together the arcs are given.
